“I’m terrible with names” usually means one thing: the name was never turned into a picture in the first place, so there was nothing for your visual memory to grab onto. Names and Faces is really just Day 1’s Code step, applied to the trickiest kind of information there is.
The move: the instant you hear a name, convert it into something you can see. Some names already are pictures (Rose, Baker, Stone). Others need a sound-alike substitute: Steven becomes “steven” sounding close to “stephen the (S)even”, or simpler, imagine the number 7. Megan becomes “mega” + “in”, a giant (mega) object crammed into a box (in). It doesn’t have to be elegant, it has to be vivid and fast.
Practice this on names you already know before trying it live on strangers, speed comes from repetition, not from getting it perfect on the first try.
